The religious origin and meaning of the Christmas tree

The Christmas tree is probably the most recognized element of this time, since millions of families around the world place the traditional tree to decorate their homes and thus celebrate the Christmas holidays. However, you probably do not know its history or its meaning, so here we will tell you about it. The popular pine is usually decorated with spheres, colored lights and a star, and each of these elements has a specific meaning beyond filling your house with joy with the decoration.

History of the Christmas tree One version tells that when the Christians arrived in northern Europe, they observed that the Celts celebrated on December 8 the birth of Frey, god of the Sun and fertility, placing decorations of an evergreen tree, since it symbolized the Universe . Once these towns were evangelized, the tradition was taken to symbolize the birth of Christ, exchanging the evergreen tree for a pine. Apples were placed on these first Christmas trees to represent original sin, and candles to symbolize the light of Christ. As time went by, the apples were exchanged for spheres and the candles for lights.

What does the Christmas decoration mean?

The meaning of the Christmas tree is that it represents Paradise, from where Adam and Eve ate the fruits, giving rise to original sin. In addition, it also serves to remember that Jesus came to Earth to achieve reconciliation. Its triangular shape is a representation of the Holy Trinity and its colors symbolize the different prayers of Advent. Blue is reconciliation, silver is gratitude, gold is praise and green is abundance and nature.
