Menopause or andropause is a process by which a man of a certain age progressively decreases not only sexual capacity but also multiple other organic functions.
Andropause is a process by which sexual capacity progressively decreases in men of a certain age, as well as some organic functions as a result of the reduction of testosterone levels in the blood. It is also called male menopause or male climacteric due to its parallelism with the process of female hormonal involution or real menopause.
Menopausal symptoms in men:
Only 30-35% of men around the age of 50 experience hormonal declines that are sudden enough to cause symptoms of andropause. The usual symptomatology of menopause in men is very varied and affects multiple organs and systems. Physical symptoms may appear such as:
- Difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection
- Decreased ejaculatory force and volume
- Loss of genital hair
- Hair loss and graying
- Hair growth of the eyebrows and nostrils
- Loss of muscle mass
- Usual tiredness or fatigue
- Muscle pains
- Osteoporosis
- Increased dryness and wrinkling of the skin
- Decreased vision and hearing ability
- Sweating and chills
- Appearance of cold hands and feet
- Constipation
Mood or psychological symptoms:
- Decreased libido or sexual appetite
- Sleep disturbances, especially insomnia
- Anxiety, distress or nervousness
- Desire to cry
- Extreme irritability
- Depression
- Feeling of apathy
- Asthenia, fatigue
